King's day, Maastricht 2020

King’s Day 2020 will not be celebrated in Maastricht this year with a visit from the Royal Family as an extraordinary addition to this special day. It was decided, in the interests of society as a whole, to officially cancel this great public celebration. We were all looking forward to this wonderful event, which many residents of Maastricht and the wider South Limburg region had been working very hard on. In light of the current situation, the decision to cancel the event is more than understandable. For now, there is only one priority: to recover as a society, and to stay as healthy as we can. We wish everyone all the strength and support they need, but above all, we hope that everyone has trust and faith in their fellow citizens. The situations demands incredibly far-reaching measures, but if we all commit to them and play our part, we will emerge stronger than ever.

Life in Maastricht

As King's Day approaches, we would like to take you on a tour of life in Maastricht through a very special series of photographs. In the upcoming weeks, you will see the many aspects of life in Maastricht and South Limburg through pictures that share a story as we share them on our social media channels. Each district in Maastricht as well as each village and city in South Limburg has a different story to tell of life. The photos were shot by Loraine Bodewes.

Route through the city

The Royal Family will be introduced to the city during a special walk. Along the route, the Royal Family will be presented with a surprising and varied programme. ‘Leef Maastricht!’ (Live Maastricht!) is the theme of the day, and thousands of spectators can watch everything from up close.

King's Day sweet tart

On 25 October 2019 – designated the Day of the sweet tart (Dag van de Vlaai) – six bakers in Maastricht created a very special vlaai: a King's Day vlaai called Apples for Orange (Appeltjes voor oranje). This vlaai combines Maastricht tradition, local ingredients, and pride in being able to host the royal family. It can be ordered from the bakers themselves. Who knows... King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima may just have a taste on 27 April 2020!

The programme

In the coming months King's Day 2020 is not the only event on the agenda; we will also be preparing for a multifaceted and exciting programme that highlights the vibrancy of the region and the unique character of Maastricht. It will showcase the spirit of Maastricht (Mestreechter Geis) a city of traditions and innovation, and a unique culture that we honour and cherish. Servé Hermans and Michel Sluysmans from the Toneelgroep Maastricht theatre ensemble will work together with local partners to put together a programme that is guaranteed to impress! The content of the programme will be announced in March 2020 during a special press conference.
